Cops rescued a suspected trafficking victim who had been missing for seven years after he “blood-curdling” screams led police to her location – a motel in Inkster, Michigan, according to a report by New York Post.
The woman, whose identity was not revealed, called her step-parents and told them that she was being held against her will at the motel. Inkster is roughly 32 kilometres from megacity Detroit and 135 kilometres from state capital Lansing.
It is a city suburb of Detroit, with a population of roughly 25,700.
The woman who vanished in 2017 was rescued this Thursday from the motel, Michigan State Police said.
The troopers determined that the woman was held at the Evergreen Motel. They confirmed that she was being held there after arriving at the motel.
“They described it as like a crying, kind of screaming type of noise that lured them to that specific area,” Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw told Michigan-based local news outlet WXYZ.
Officers had to force their way into the room and they found the woman inside, alone. The woman, now in her 30s, was physically unharmed, but the room contained drugs and a gun. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently undergoing counselling. She has been reunited with her family. Police have not revealed her identity and did not offer further details about her disappearance.
Detectives who probe human trafficking are involved in the missing persons case.
“We’ll kind of look at what’s next, right… interview her if a crime did take place such as human trafficking or is it a domestic violence situation or is it different. I don’t want to use the word kidnapping like somebody grabbed her and took her to that place. It may have started out as a relationship that turns into being held against your will and being trafficked,” Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw further added, according to WXYZ.
Police have identified a suspect but did not take anyone into custody yet.
