A day after the purported phone call between Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and US President-elect Donald Trump, a controversy erupted after conflicting reports about the details of the conversation between the two leaders emerged in the public domain.
According to CNN, in a clear violation of diplomatic protocol, Team Nawaz Sharif even released the details of phone call between the two leaders, where Trump glowingly praised Sharif.
The statement as reported by CNN quotes President-elect Trump as telling Sharif "you are a terrific guy. You are doing amazing work which is visible in every way. I am looking forward to see you soon. As I am talking to you, Prime Minister, I feel I am talking to a person I have known for long."
Donald Trump's team however has claimed that the two leaders spoke about how to improve their ties in the future.
Both the leaders "had a productive conversation about how the United States and Pakistan will have a strong working relationship in the future," statement released by Trump's office said contradicting the details released by the Pakistan.
Earlier on Thursday, a statement by Pakistan PM's office quoted Trump as telling Sharif "I am ready and willing to play any role that you want me to play to address and find solutions to the outstanding problems. It will be an honour and I will personally do it. Feel free to call me any time, even before 20th January, that is before I assume my office."
On Wednesday, Sharif had invited Trump to visit Pakistan to which the latter reportedly said that he would love to visit the country and meet its people.
Earlier, Trump had said that if elected, he'd like to mediate between India and Pakistan. But like the Obama administration, Trump also said that he would only mediate if both countries asked him to do so.
