The Israeli government has taken down a map of India that incorrectly depicted Jammu and Kashmir on the country’s official website following an outcry on social media.
The map was taken down after an Indian influencer raised the issue on the social media platform X. “India stands with Israel. But does Israel stand with India? Note the map of India (pay attention to Jammu & Kashmir) on Israel’s official website,” wrote Abhijit Chavda on X, who has close to two lakh followers on the platform.
‘Thank you for noticing’
In response to concerns raised by social media users, Israel’s ambassador to India Reuven Azar wrote that the incorrect map was a “website editor’s mistake.” “Thank you for noticing. It has been taken down,” he said. After the map was taken down, Chavda thanked the Israeli government.
“Greatly appreciate Government of Israel’s proactive step to remove the incorrect map of India. Demonstrates Israel’s friendship with India, and genuine desire to strengthen the friendship. India stands with Israel,” he said. This appreciation for Israel’s prompt response and the overwhelming support for the Jewish state from Indians on social media comes as it is embroiled in multiple fronts of war in West Asia.
Notably, when Hamas attacked Israel last October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first leaders to condemn the attacks and extend support to the Jewish state As the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack nears, India continues to underline the need for dialogue and diplomacy as part of its stand to resolve the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
While condemning the October 7 terrorist act against Israel, India has also expressed concern over the loss of civilian lives in the conflict. Even before the situation began to exacerbate in West Asia, India focused on the need for peace and humanitarian aid for Palestinians, while also making a case for Israel’s right to respond to the violence perpetrated on its soil.
