A village located just an hour away from one of the largest cities in both England and the United Kingdom, London, is Pluckley. This village is anything but ordinary and quaint. While on the surface it may look like an unassuming place, if you dig a bit deeper into the history of the place, you will come across horrifying and spine-chilling stories of gruesome murders, ghouls and it is said that the forest is filled with the screams of those left behind. It is one of the most haunted places in Britain and has also found its place in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1989. Pluckley has a long history of ruthless murders. Many people have claimed that they have spotted ghosts wandering around the town. Some claim that the spirits are linked to the Dering family who were the owners of a manor between the 15th century and World War I.
One of the first places which is believed to be haunted by the ghosts of the Dering family is the Church of St Nicholas, where people have reportedly seen strange lights, and heard knocking sounds from beneath the chapel floor, where many of the families are buried. A female ghost is attributed to live in Rose Court. As per reports, there are stories that the Rose Court was built by one of the family members of Dering’s to house a mistress. Unfortunately, she fell in love with a monk and upon not being able to get over the heartbreak, she drank poison and died. It is said that the Rose Court has an eerie atmosphere and often moans and groans can be heard at night.
Not just her ghost, but also the spirit of the monk who she was in love with is said to be drifting through Greystones after he died of a broken heart. Reportedly, his figure is said to be spotted around the building before he disappears.
Another haunted place is Dering Arms, an old pub which is said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman in the 19th-century, who sits at the table in the pub. Many have mistaken her to be a real drinker.
