What Is Birth Tourism? How This Bizarre Way To Get Citizenship Works
Birth tourism is the practice of travelling to another country or city for the purpose of giving birth in that country.

A pregnant woman needs utmost care. During this time, doctors mostly advise them to stay at home and not engage in heavy work. Despite this, have you ever heard of pregnant women crossing the border and landing on a foreign land before delivery? It is not that they are not allowed to live in their country, city, or village, but their intention is to achieve citizenship of a developed country like America by birth tourism. Wondering what that is? Let us tell you. Birth tourism is the practice of travelling to another country or city for the purpose of giving birth in that country. The main reason for birth tourism is to obtain citizenship for the child in a country with birthright citizenship.

As per reports, there are many ways to get citizenship in developed countries – like marrying a native, acquiring citizenship after living there for a long time, and many more. Over the years, another method has become very popular, and that is called birth tourism.

There are 31 countries, including America, Canada, and Argentina, where if a child is born, he or she acquires citizenship of that country. The pregnant woman must be delivered in these countries, so that their children can get citizenship in rich countries and have a better life. The standard of living of the people here is good, and many extra facilities are also available, which their children will also receive in the future. This trend has intensified in the last few years. This is the reason why some countries like America, have started taking strict actions.

Reports suggest that a few days ago, pregnant women from Russia were caught while fleeing to Argentina. When they were interrogated at Buenos Aires Airport, the issue of birth tourism came to light. These women were going to Argentina, just a few days before delivery. In America, many companies organise tourism for this. They are also provided with hotel and medical facilities at a cost.

Pregnant women from many countries including China and Russia go to America for this purpose. The administration has gotten worried and has started imposing restrictions as well. Now, pregnant women coming on American tourist visas have to prove that they came here for some reason other than giving birth to a child. Temporary B-1 and B-2 visas for birth tourism are also no longer issued. The government said that the birth tourism industry is putting additional burden on hospitals; hence, restrictions have been imposed.

According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2019, about 12,000 children were born who came to America from another country. In 2017, it was 10,000, and in 2007, it was 7,800. While in Canada, about 6,000 children were considered to be born through tourism. More than 3,000 children were born in Argentina. Many countries, including Ireland, have banned it. There are 31 countries that still give citizenship to children born there. Most women from poor countries adopt the path of birth tourism. Children born through birth tourism are called anchor babies.
