On May 10, one of the strongest geomagnetic storms for years hit Earth. This unleashed a spectacle of celestial lights that started in Tasmania and reached parts of the UK and Europe. The Northern Lights, also called Aurora borealis, showcased a dazzling display in the sky. Impressed by the rare appearance of the aurora borealis, many people were surprised to see the extraordinary view and took out their cameras to capture the stunning phenomenon.

After one of the strongest geomagnetic storms for years hit Earth yesterday, many parts of Europe experienced a spectacular view of the Northern Lights. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a rare, severe geomagnetic storm warning when the solar outburst reached Earth. They have also predicted that the effect of the storm is expected to last through the weekend and even through the next week. Social media was flooded with pictures of the aurora as many people captured them and shared the experience on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter).

One of the users with the handle @emmaclarkeillu1 shared a picture of the pink, blue, and iridescent purple sky. She wrote, “I have just woken up both of my children to see the northern lights!”

Another user named Dr. Janinna Ramirez shared the beautiful view. She wrote, “For those that know me on here, you’ll know I have two things on my bucket list: a murmuration and the Northern Lights. I achieved one last year a few miles down the road, and tonight I’ve achieved the other from my back garden. I’m overwhelmed….”

A third user shared the silhouette of her and her cat enjoying the view. She wrote, “I can’t believe I now have a picture of me and my cat admiring the northern lights in my own garden.”

According to The Guardian, the Northern Lights were seen in parts of Essex, Suffolk, Kent, Hampshire, and Liverpool. Some sightings were also reported over Ireland. Talking about the Northern Lights, are caused by the interaction between charged particles from the Sun and the Earth’s magnetic field. They are particularly visible near polar regions like Norway, Sweden, Finland, etc.
