Securing your dream position can be a daunting task in today’s competitive job market, often marked by numerous setbacks and rejections. Such was the experience of Qingyue Wang, who shared her journey on social media platform LinkedIn after facing rejection not once, not twice, but at least four times in her pursuit of a coveted role at one of the world’s most esteemed organisations, Google.
Qingyue in her post detailed the shortcomings in each attempt, starting with her initial application in 2018. Despite her excitement, she failed to pass Google’s online assessment.
“The 1st time was in 2018. I received an online assessment from Google. I was excited, but I didn’t pass the OA. Afterwards, an interviewer reached out to me. They had reviewed my OA answers and wanted to give me a second chance. Unfortunately, I didn’t pass on this attempt either," she wrote in her viral post.
Qingyue faced another hurdle during her third attempt in 2020, when she didn’t clear the phone screening interview. “My 3rd attempt was in early 2020. I had a phone screening interview, which I didn’t pass," she added.
Despite previous setbacks, Qingyue decided to apply once more for a Site Reliability Engineer role in 2020. However, even after clearing four rounds of interviews, the role was ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic.
“Persisting, I applied again in 2020 for a Site Reliability Engineer role. After four rounds of interviews and receiving positive feedback, the role was unfortunately canceled due to the pandemic," she wrote.
After several setbacks, Qingyue’s perseverance finally paid off in 2022 when she secured a Software Engineer role at Google in her fifth attempt. Following her successful interview, she received a gift from Google, accompanied by a message, “Congratulations, searching for a job is hard and we really appreciate that you chose top search at Google – so here’s a gift for us. We hope you’ll join us soon!"
She concluded her post with a message, “The job search process can be complex and is often fraught with rejection, redirection, doubt, and frustration. However, persistence is typically a major factor and it’s something within your control. Keep going — we’re on this self-improvement journey together!"
Her post quickly went viral and amassed a multitude of reactions from the online users. A user commented, “That’s awesome! Persistence and resilience are key! I failed the California bar exam twice and almost gave up. 4 months of studying per attempt, only to fail twice, and all of this while working full-time." Another commented, “There is nothing good to be rejected many times. Nothing can assure your job. Google is not God, it is a heartache to see this kind of history."
