Even in the solitude of a deserted forest, the faintest sound can shiver down your spine. Sometimes it is so scary and makes you feel like someone is calling out your name or that some ghost is following you. Many attribute these sounds to wandering souls trying to talk. But scientists have uncovered the truth behind these haunting sounds.
As per the report from Live Science, there is neither any soul nor any ghost behind these noises.
The mysterious noises are a result of Auditory Pareidolia, a phenomenon where the brain interprets random sounds, such as the sound of a fan, flowing water, or the sound of an aeroplane, as familiar patterns.
According to audiologists, due to these sounds, a special kind of pattern is formed in our brains, due to which we hear these sounds.
You might be thinking about hallucinations, but auditory pareidolia is not a hallucination at all. This happens when you hear sounds that are not there. In the language of science, it is also called musical ear syndrome. Most of the people who are victims of this feel that someone is keeping an eye on them, whereas in reality, the case is different.
Neil Bauman, CEO of the Centre for Hearing Loss Help, explains that our brains have a vast database of sounds and patterns. Out of whatever sound we hear, or whatever word we know, it selects only those words which seem good according to its pattern. Words start resonating in the mind according to the pattern of the situation that the brain sees. As we feel, the same picture reaches the brain and it selects the words. This can create the illusion of voices or whispers in otherwise silent surroundings.
They are the natural result of our brain’s pattern recognition processes.
