A US man recently hit a jackpot of $400,000, approximately Rs 33.42 crore, after he tried his luck in the lottery. North Carolina resident Melvin Brooks tried the lottery on Saturday and won the game’s first top prize. Brooks told officials that he watched a friend winning $100 (Rs 8355) in the same game and decided to buy a jackpot scratch-off ticket.

In the Circle A Food Store parking lot on North Main Street in Mount Holly, Brooks scratched out the winning ticket. He intends to divide the award money with his wife and kids after paying off his mortgage.

“I saw a friend’s post that he won $100 on that scratch-off, so I decided to try it,” Brooks was quoted by Yahoo News.

He purchased his fortunate $5 (Rs 417.75) ticket in Mount Holly and scratched it in the parking lot while with his cousin.

Brooks claimed that since winning $400,000 is not something that happens every day, they went out to celebrate.

After making the necessary state and federal tax withholdings, he came to lottery headquarters on Monday to claim his win and was given $286,001, according to Yahoo News.

With five $400,000 top prizes, the $400,000 Jackpot game made its debut in April. There are still four $400,000 prizes up for grabs.

An earlier example that made headlines included a US man who won $842 million (more than Rs 7,000 crore) in the lottery in the new year.

The lotto winner reportedly purchased their Powerball ticket from a food store in Flower Castle.

The lottery draw took place the day before New Year’s.

The new year gave him a change of fortune, as he directly won the $842 million prize.

This award has reportedly been determined to be the tenth-largest lottery prize ever won in history.

The winner was offered two choices for receiving their money from the firm.

The first choice allows the winner to receive the money in thirty instalments spread over 29 years.

The second option allows the winner to get the whole amount at once.

The total sum awarded to the winner will be $425.2 million (Rs 35.54 billion) once taxes are deducted.
