A singer diagnosed with cancer penned a final song for her 7-year-old son, which went viral on TikTok as her final wish. At 31 years old, Cat Janice discovered a lump on her neck in 2021, later diagnosed by doctors as sarcoma, a rare tumour affecting bone and tissue. Despite initially being declared cancer-free post-treatment, Cat faced a devastating setback when the cancer recurred in her lungs in June 2023.
Despite being diagnosed with an illness, Cat found solace in music and continued to pursue her passion for creating and producing songs as a means of coping with the situation.
In a courageous video posted on social media after her recent diagnosis, she announced her decision to undergo treatment once again. She emphasized her determination to tackle it with strength and promised to keep everyone informed about her journey.
“And thank you guys so much for loving me.”
Providing an update to her followers in January, she revealed, “The tumours basically tripled overnight.” Subsequently, on January 10, 2024, she entered hospice care as reported by PEOPLE due to her inability to breathe independently. She disclosed to the publication her decision to bequeath her entire discography to her son, expressing her desire to release a final track.
The final track, Dance Outta My Head, spontaneously emerged while she and her son were driving together. Recalling the creative process, she shared with the publication, “We came up with some fun lyrics and a little ditty, I song banked it and made a little voice note of it and as time went on we would bounce around in the car to it every now and then.”
The musician experienced a moment of disbelief when, while attending to the beep of her medical support machine, she decided to check her phone and discovered that iTunes had tagged her, indicating that her song had charted. She recounted that she found herself sitting there in the middle of the night, staring at her phone in disbelief. “What the heck is going on here,” she recounted. “I started yelling, and my parents came down, they were like, what is going on?”
It dawned on Janice that she had reached number 11 on the Hot Dance/Electronic billboard. Overwhelmed with emotion upon realizing that the song, which originated from a simple moment with her son, had resonated with so many, she took to her page to express her gratitude, posting, YOU DID THIS!
“You all loved me so hard and gave me that moment, and I am forever grateful. Whatever God brings my way, I know I am loved,” she shared.
Reflecting on the outpouring of support and the unexpected success of her song, Cat Janice, 31, expressed her astonishment in an interview with TODAY.com. “I’m just honestly so blown away by everyone’s love and how they’ve supported me through this and shared this story,” she said.
She expressed surprise, mentioning she hadn’t anticipated still being here, and described it as a miraculous experience to witness. She expressed her profound happiness at being present in this moment.
