If you have even taken up the task of looking for suitable accommodation for yourself in Mumbai, you might understand how daunting it can be. Add to it the tag of being a single mother and it becomes all the more difficult. While it is a struggle for everyone on a house hunt, even our celebrities face the brunt of it. In a recent social media post, television actress Charu Asopa, known for her roles in popular TV shows such as Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, Diya Aur Baati Hum, and Mere Angne Mein, opened up about the challenges she faces in finding suitable housing as a single mother. The video she shared shed light on a distressing circumstance in her life, unveiling the difficulties encountered by single mothers on a daily basis.
Charu, who is the single mother of her daughter Ziana, shared her struggle to secure a new apartment. In her YouTube vlog, she revealed the heartbreaking reality of being turned down for a rental simply because of her status as a single mother. The actress detailed how certain landlords and building occupants displayed reluctance in renting flats to single mothers, showing a preference for families instead. This discriminatory attitude left Charu emotionally shaken, a sentiment she expressed with raw authenticity in her video.
Charu informs her fans that after going through 3 to 4 apartments, they went to their house as her daughter fell asleep.
Later, while playing with Ziana, the actress informs her fans that the house hunt is still going on. Charu says, “It’s a tough job in Mumbai to find a good house."
In her vlog, she further revealed she had seen a few vacant flats with empty kitchens, lacking even the basic kitchen cabinets. She articulated the need for functional kitchen spaces, especially considering her demanding shooting schedule, which leaves her with limited time to dedicate to setting up a new home.
Charu has been looking for a house for quite some time now. Before this, she had also taken to Instagram to elaborate on her situation. In her extensive text, she lamented the prevailing societal norms that attach a woman’s eligibility for housing to her connection with a man. She expressed disappointment at the disparity between the ideals of women empowerment and the ground reality of housing discrimination.
