Xiaomi never stops to surprise its customers. Their recent surprise was the massive Mi Max that was launched in India last week.
The phone has a massive 6.44 inch display. In a country like India where bigger is always better, Xiaomi's put their bets on such a form factor. This device is the third launch by Xiaomi in India this year.
Xiaomi believes that there is still a market for calling tablets in India. It's just the design and form-factor that pushes people away from buying large 7-inch calling tablets from Samsung and Lenovo. So they saw a problem and now they seek to resolve that with the Mi Max. A device that's probably confused that whether it's a smartphone or a tablet.
For starters, even I didn't like what I saw. But it's a matter of habit. Back in 2012 when Samsung launched its first Note, many of us were perplexed as to whether the consumers would actually like such a device. But within a year we saw so many smartphones come with screen sizes of more than 5-inch and even inching closer to the 6-inch form-factor.
It's not like other smartphone makers have not experimented with a more than 6-inch display device. Sony tried their hands with the Xperia Ultra. It was a phone that was well made for its time but it was the price that consumers didn't fancy. Micromax has been making a 6-inch plus device for years now in the form of Canvas Doodle.
Now, many would think that it's almost similar in specs as compared to the Redmi Note 3, but the Mi Max caters to a completely different set of consumers. People who like calling tablets now have something in the market that's not that bulky and in a way still qualifies as a phone.
It's affordable too and that large 6.44-inch display is just the right size to watch videos on. I am a Netflix addict and the Mi Max is just the right size for me to watch shows on, without squinting my eyes for the details. In fact, I even enjoyed watching Game Of Thrones on the Mi Max.
Xiaomi might be targeting the calling tablet market, but I think they should concentrate on consumers who like streaming videos and watching them on their phones. Its battery also lasts long despite watching so many videos on it and using it as a personal phone the Mi Max still had some juice left in its 4850 mAh battery to last it the entire day.
The Mi Max did work out for me as a great device for video streaming and also regular work, but that does not necessarily mean it works for all. But if you like watching or streaming HD videos the Mi Max can be a perfect companion and a replacement for your tablet. And all that comes in a budget.
