Japanese electronics giant Sony has announced that it is working on a new VR headset for PlayStation 5. Sony said that the development on the PS5 VR headset has already begun and it won’t be launching this year. Sony said that the next-generation VR system will enhance everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will also use a single cord to simplify setup and ease-of-use, while also enabling a high-fidelity visual experience. Sony will also launch a new VR controller with the PS5 VR headset.
“Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset,” Sony said in a blog post. The VR controller from Sony will incorporate some of the key features of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller, along with focus on great ergonomics. Sony said that there’s still a lot of development underway for the new VR system, and hence the PS5 VR headset won’t be launching in 2021. “But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality,” Sony’s head of PlayStation platform and planning Hideaki Nishino said in the blog post.
Sony is also said to start issuing the developer kits for the PS5 VR headset soon, but it has not detailed the full specs or release date yet. The new hardware, from what can be inferred from Sony’s release, is designed to improve some of the limitations from the original PlayStation VR Headset. “We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input,” Sony said.
Sony’s first PlayStation VR headset for PlayStation 4 debuted more than four years back, and requires a special camera adapter in order to run on the PlayStation 5. Sony has said in the past that the VR accessory still has a long way to go, confirming its commitment to the VR headset.
