New Delhi: In what would give a new ray of hope for patients of motor neuron disease and other such conditions, Intel has made its iconic software free for everyone. The same technology has been long assisting renowned physicist Stephen Hawking communicate with the world.

The chipmaker has been building technology to help the physicist write books, give speeches, and talk to the world despite having a rare neuron condition that has left him paralysed and bound to a wheelchair for years.

The Assistive Context- Aware Toolkit (ACAT) has now been released as an open source software allowing engineers, developers and researchers to take the technology forward and improve the lives of patients living with health conditions that make using typical computer interfaces impossible, Engadget notes.

ACAT currently uses webcam-based face detection for user control. The tool can open documents, browse the web, and give users precise cursor control with the movement of face muscles. Developers can now explore its potential for more custom inputs.

The base software is available for free on Github, and Intel is hosting a separate site with documentation, videos on features and compatible sensors and a detailed manual to help users get started.
