Google today announced the release of a new version of Android essentially for developing Internet of Things products, named ‘Android Things’.
Android things is a rebranded version of Google’s one and a half year old Project Brillo.
The rebranding comes with a major shift from Brillo’s lighter version of Android for developers to a full Android developer experience, as told by a Google rep.

‘Android Things’ is an OS that will work in the background to allow smart devices to carry out functions on their own.
These smart devices would then interact with the Android devices by connecting to the cloud through a distinct communication system called Weave.
Apart from removing a few components that were not really aligned with Internet of Things, Google has more or less kept its Android developer tools (Android SDK, Google Play Services and others) the same for this platform.
Project Brillo did not work out for Google as they planned it to be and phased out almost as soon as it was introduced.
