The Marathi entertainment industry, renowned for its serials and theatre plays, has encountered challenges in capturing audience attention in the film sector. However, the recently released Marathi movie, Jhimma 2, directed by Hemant Dhome, has successfully overcome this hurdle by surpassing 50 days in theatres, earning a notable place among Marathi films with enduring theatrical runs.
The drama film, featuring an ensemble cast including Suhas Joshi, Nirmiti Sawant, Kshitee Jog, Suchitra Bandekar, Sayali Sanjeev, Shivani Surve, and Rinku Rajguru, continued the narrative from its predecessor. Jhimma 2 delves into the reunion of a group of women, exploring friendships while celebrating the 75th birthday of the character Indumati, portrayed by Suhas Joshi, during a trip to London. Released on November 24, the movie has not only secured its spot among successful Marathi films but has also grossed over Rs 19 crore at the box office.
Facing competition from blockbuster Bollywood films like Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, Prabhas’ Salaar, and Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki, Jhimma 2 emerged as the second highest-grossing Marathi film of 2023. Even 50 days since its release, the theatres continue to witness houseful shows, solidifying its success.
Looking back at some of the previous Marathi films that achieved similar milestones:
Chandramukhi (2022): Directed by Prasad Oak and based on Vishwas Patil’s novel, this film starred Amruta Khanvilkar, Adinath Kothare, and Mrunmayee Deshpande. Grossing over Rs 24 crore, it became one of the highest-grossing Marathi movies of 2022.
Me Vasantrao (2022): Nipun Dharmadhikari directed this biographical film about Indian classical musician Vasantrao Deshpande. Starring Rahul Deshpande, Vasantrao’s grandson, the movie made it to the eligibility list for the Oscars in 2023, marking a rare feat for Marathi cinema.

These successful films showcase the enduring appeal and growing prominence of Marathi cinema, breaking barriers and captivating audiences both regionally and globally.
