New Delhi: As the Narendra Modi government is about to complete one year in office, the Congress on Monday raised pertinent questions over the achievements of the Central government.
"They came with a promise of ache din, as far as the economy is concerned it meant development an more jobs. The government has completed 20 per cent of its term. It is only fair to ask what have they done so far. My worry is that whatever the intentions of the government, I do not see any vision of how the economy will go forward. I do not see how the policies of the government are being taken forward," former Finance Minister P Chidambaram claimed.
He also said that a number of things which could have been done for the economy have been kept in the back burner. "The credit growth is sluggish, lowest in many years. The coal sector is performing very slowly. The government should answer the questions surrounding this," he said.
He also denied that the Congress obstructing any bills to be passed in Parliament. Quoting Arun Jaitley, he said that the Finance Minister had himself always said that "obstructionism is a legitimate parliamentary tactic. Though we have not obstructed any bill. They obstructed the Insurance Bill for five successive sessions, we passed it after three months. We had reservations for the Black money Bill but we allowed it to be passed," he claimed.
While accepting that the retail inflation has come down, he said that there has been a significant hike in vegetables and pulses. He rubbished the claims of the Modi government that inflation had gone down only after they took charge. "The prices started declining since November 2013 and the WPI touched zero on November 2014. The decline in prices is the result of efforts of the UPA and the NDA government But the biggest contributor have been the oil producers. I wish the oil prices would have declined in our regime," he asserted.
