Kolkata: Six municipalities across West Bengal are going to polls on Sunday. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Congress are contesting separately in these polls. The civic polls are a testing ground for both parties for the larger panchayat elections next year.
The virtual split in the alliance was attributed to bitter relations between Congress and Trinamool Congress which jointly fought the 2011 Assembly polls.
Congress alleged that its candidates were attacked and even threatened by Trinamool Congress in some wards in a few civic bodies, which the Trinamoool Congress has countered.
CPI(M) also traded charges against Trinamool Congress about the harassment of its candidates in Haldia municipality, in particular and said free and fair poll might not be possible.
CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose expressed apprehension that presence of "outsiders" in some wards of Haldia municipality, might hamper free and fair election.
Left Front has already urged the state election commission for ensuring free and fair elections in the six municipalities.
Rubbishing the allegations, Trinamool Congfress has said that the party would make a clean sweep in all the six municipalities. BJP has also put up candidates in all the six civic bodies.
All the 129 seats in the six civic bodies - Durgapur, Dhupguri, Haldia, Nalhati, Panskura and Coopers' Camp -will witness triangular contests with the main contestants being from Congress, Trinamool Congress and CPI(M)-led Left Front. The seats are spread over Jalpaiguri, East Midnapore, Birbhum and Bardhaman.
