New Delhi: Pitching support for Congress ahead of Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, a group of Muslim NGOs on Monday flagged off a caravan that would campaign in support of the party in the state.

Choosing the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary, the caravan "Karven-e-Bedari" was shown the green flag by MoS for Parliamentary Affairs, Rajeev Shukla, in presence of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and other eminent guests.

Speaking at the function, Shukla said Muslims needed better opportunities in education for their talent to be streamlined in right direction.

The caravan has been initiated by Aligarh-based NGO Millat Bedari Muhim Committee (MBMC) in collaboration with Jamia Urdu and Forum for Muslim Studies and Analysis (FMSA) with support from Mahesh Bhatt.

Bhatt, who was part of a similar caravan campaign with MBMC in 2009 during Lok Sabha Polls, came in strong support of Congress saying one could have problem with the government or the partymen but not the ideology.

However, he refused to call the campaign a political one and instead termed it an initiative to make Muslims exercise their right to vote.

"The idea is to make Muslims exercise their right. Muslims have been stigmatised as 'vote-bank' so why not use this tag for the benefit of the community," said Bhatt. The caravan will be taken across 20 cities till Feb 28 in UP with students and teachers from Aligarh Muslim University participating in it among youths from MBMC.
