Lucknow: While the Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) do their post mortems after teh Uttar Pradesh Assembly Poll results, the focus in Lucknow is on who will be the next chief minister - Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav or his son Akhilesh Yadav? The party is yet to decide on the chief minister in its forthcoming parliamentary board meeting after Holi.
A day after the landslide verdict, top leaders of SP met on Wednesday to figure out whether time for official passing of the baton from the father to the son had come.
"Akhilesh has to be the CM, the mandate is in his favour," SP MLA Tej Narayan Pandey said.
But its not an easy task and Akhilesh is aware of that, so for the time being he is stating what he has been saying for the last couple of months that his father will be the chief minister.
The old guard of SP led by two stalwarts Shivpal Yadav and Aazam Khan, is opposed to the mission 'Akhilesh for CM.' But there are several factors which may end up in Akhilesh's favour.
Akhilesh had a huge say in the distribution of party tickets. He has already been given a free hand by Mulayam Singh to manage party affairs. Mulayam's deteriorating health and focus on Delhi's political scenario will also mean that Akhilesh will play an active role in policy making.
On Thursday, the entire Yadav clan goes to Saifai for Holi celebrations. Akhilesh has already experienced that managing law and order in a state like UP can be a tricky affair. He wouldn't want to start off opening multiple fronts of confrontation while the sweet taste of victory is still fresh.
