New Delhi: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu began his Budget speech by recounting Mahatma Gandhi's famous train journey before he joined the freedom struggle. He said, "Bapu took a train voyage before starting the freedom movement."
Prabhu said Gandhiji discovered India by travelling in third class which no longer exist.
To celebrate 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's return to Indian from South Africa, Prabhu said, "The IRCTC to promote Gandhi tour journey to celebrate anniversary of Mahatama Gandhi's return from South Africa."
He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying, "I thank Prime Minister Modi for infusing all Indians with a sense of pride and dream of prosperous nation."
Prabhu refused to increase passenger fare and instead announced that Railways would focus on cleanliness. "I appeal to the people that railways is your travelling home, please keep it clean," he said.
He announced a long list of passenger facilities and amenities including two 24x7 helpline numbers for the travellers both of which will become active from March 1, 2015. While 138 will be an all India helpline number, 182 will be for security complaints.
