A stampede-like situation prevailed in the joint public meeting of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav at Phulpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on Sunday. Both the leaders left the venue without addressing the crowd.

The incident took place at a public meeting at Padila in Phulpur Parliamentary constituency where Congress and SP workers reportedly got out of control and attempted to climb the stage. Visuals from the scene showed broken barricades and a chaotic crowd.

Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi repeatedly urged party workers and the public to calm down but to no avail, following which, they held a brief discussion among themselves and left the venue. Police and security personnel struggled to control the excited crowd.

Congress candidate from Raebareli Lok Sabha seat Rahul Gandhi urged people to vote for Ujjwal Ramansingh, the party’s candidate from Prayagraj and make him win with a huge majority.

“Thousands of our workers are here to support the Congress-Samajwadi Party partnership. I want to ask you to stand against the BJP-RSS workers at the polling booths and make the candidate from here win with 5 lakh votes… Here is our candidate Ujjwal Ramansingh, make him win with a huge majority…” Gandhi said.
