Sonia, Manmohan meet; discuss portfolios
Union Cabinet expansion will take place on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Congress President and United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Monday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at 7 Race Course Road.

The duo discussed portfolio allocation for Cabinet ministers who took oath on Friday but were not given charge of any ministry.

Cabinet expansion will take place on Tuesday and some ministers of state along with ministers with independent charge, too, will be inducted into the ministry.

Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) M Karunanidhi's son M K Azhagiri will reaching Delhi on Monday afternoon. DMK has relented and accepted the Cabinet berths offered by the Congress, ending the deadlock over portfolio allocation.

Karunanidhi has nominated Azhagiri for the Chemicals and Fertiliser portfolio, A Raja for IT and nephew Dayanidhi Maran for the Textile Ministry.

DMK's Rajya Sabha member and Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi might be made Minister of State Women and Child Development while T R Baalu might be made Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Azhagiri is a first-time Lok Sabha MP from Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

Sources say National Security Advisor MK Narayanan broke the ice between the DMK and Congress and hammered the deal. But DMK is yet to make it official that it is joining the Union government.

Names of some new entrants in the Lok Sabha like Mallikarjun Kharge (Karnataka) and Manicka Tagore (Tamil Nadu) are also being mentioned for induction in the ministry.

The probable names in Trinamool Congress include Dinesh Trivedi, Sudip Bandhopadhyay, Sultan Ahmed and Mukul Roy.
