Lucknow: There was shouting and screaming and choked voices. In the end the Samajwadi Party (SP) meeting called by Mulayam Singh Yadav turned into a family drama involving him, his son Akhilesh Yadav and his brother Shivpal Yadav.
At the beginning, Akhilesh asked for time to speak to his father and SP Supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and the sacked minister Shivpal Yadav over the "rising confusion" in the party, but lost his cool towards the end of the meeting when Mulayam asked him to touch the feet of Shivpal.
Having touched his uncle's feet, Akhilesh asked Mulayam to "tell Shivpal that he shouldn't support conspirators and those who work against the party."
Akhilesh took the mike and said, "Amar Singh got a story planted against me in a newspaper in which I was termed as Aurangzeb."
At this, Shivpal rushed to the defence of his close aide saying, "This is a lie, Amar Singh hasn't done anything like that."
The disgruntled Akhilesh then said that this should be checked with MLC Ashu Malik, a close aide of Mulayam.
In his speech, Akhilesh played the dutiful son, saying he is ready to step down if his father asked him to. "Netaji, if there is a conspiracy against the party I will ensure that it is investigated. If you had asked for my resignation, I would have resigned."
But Shivpal, who was recently sacked as minister by Akhilesh, was not impressed. He accused Akhilesh of trying to form another party: “I swear that Akhilesh told me. I will form the party and fight election with other parties. He said it, he said it to me."
Mulayam continued to back Shivpal and attack his son."Drunkards and goons have been added to the party. You get some power and it goes to your head. Shivpal Yadav is leader of the masses."
Mulayam also dismissed Akhilesh’s claims against Amar Singh and said he "won't listen to anything against Shivpal and Amar Singh" and that "Amar Singh is like a brother" to him.
