New Delhi: High political drama was witnessed in the national capital on Sunday with Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party indulging in a slugfest over the controversial Land Acquisition Ordinance and the performance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 11-month regime.
After Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, back from his nearly two-month long mysterious sabbatical, took on the Narendra Modi government, BJP leaders went on the offensive targeting the former of being far removed from reality.
In his first public address on Sunday after returning from his leave, Rahul promised to fight for farmers while accusing the BJP-led NDA government of being anti-poor and anti-agricultural class.
"Modi wants to give your land to industrialist friends from which he has taken loans for his massive election campaign. In the Gujarat model, Modi showed us that he can snatch land from farmers very easily," Rahul said at Kisan Khet Mazdoor (farmer and agricultural labour) rally in Ramlila Maidan in Delhi.
He also targeted Modi for attacking the opposition in a foreign country. "Modi went to foreign countries where he said he is cleaning away the garbage of 50 years. I felt very bad over it. The words Modi spoke does not do justice to the post of PM or Modi himself."
He also took a dig at Modi's 'Make in India' campaign calling it a pipe dream of the Prime Minister.
Buoyed by the good turnout at the rally, Congress President Sonia Gandhi also accused the government of rubbing salt on the wounds of farmers hit hard by unseasonal rains and hailstorm.
Not ready to accept Rahul's claims, the BJP was quick to launch a counter attack.
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad hit out at the Congress demanding an apology from Rahul for "insulting the most popular mandate" during his speech.
BJP criticised Rahul's comment on the Gujarat model of land acquisition and questioned his brother-in-law Robert Vadra's "model of development and land acquisition". "Rahul Gandhi said we won by taking loans from industrialists. Is he allowed to make fun of the nation's decision like this? We demand Rahul Gandhi should apologise to the people of India," said Ravi Shankar Prasad.
Talking about the Land Acquisition Ordinance, BJP said that it was brought to benefit farmers so that they become entitled to compensation amount which is four times the present value and other such benefits.
