Polling ends peacefully in Delhi amid tight security
The fate of 863 candidates, including Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, was sealed in ballot boxes.

New Delhi: Polling to elect a 69-member Delhi assembly concluded peacefully Saturday even as it was shadowed by the terror strikes in Mumbai.

Officials said barring stray incidents of violence in a few areas, polling passed off peacefully, even though people were slow to come out to vote with many glued to their television sets watching the climactic moments of the Mumbai terror standoff.

The fate of 863 candidates, including Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, was sealed in ballot boxes. Delhi assembly has 70 seats but balloting in the Rajinder Nagar seat was deferred following the death of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Puran Chand Yogi.

The main contest in Delhi is between the Congress, which has ruled the city since 1998 and hopes to get yet another five-year term, and a resurgent BJP, led by the veteran Vijay Kumar Malhotra.
