New Delhi: RJD MP from Siwan, Mohammad Shahabuddin, who has been given life imprisonment for kidnapping and murdering CPI (ML) leader Chhote Lal Gupta in 1999, has stirred a political debate.
Kaushalya Devi, the mother of former JNU students' union president Chandrashekhar, who was allegedly murdered by Shahabuddin, has said that the MP deserves nothing less than the death sentence.
“Shahabuddin should be given the death sentence and he should be removed from Parliament. He's not worthy of it. He is a goon,” Kaushalya Devi said.
But Shahabuddin's lawyer Abhay Kumar Ranjan said that he will continue to be an MP until an appeal is filed.
“An MP or an MLA cannot be removed from as long as the appeal is pending. The appeal has to be filed within three months,” Ranjan explained.
Meanwhile, political parties are now engaged in a war of words over the Shahabuddin issue with BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu calling for the RJP MP's resignation.
“The court's decision should be respected and he should resign. The Congress doesn't have the guts to ask for his resignation,” Naidu retorted.
The Congress, responding to BJP's demand asked the saffron party not to go for a discussion on MPs convicted of heinous crimes. Like Minister of State for Home, Shriprakash Jaiswal said the BJP should not try to politicise the issue.
“The BJP should call an all-party meet and discuss the issue. They shouldn't bring politics into this,” Jaiswal said.
