Mamata to table Singur land bill in Assembly
The Singur Land Return Bill will revoke the lease agreement between the Tatas and WBIDC.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Mibnister Mamata Banerjee will table a bill on Singur land in the state Assembly on Tuesday which will return 400 acres acquired for a Tata plant back to farmers.

The Singur Land Return Bill seeks cancellation of lease agreement with Tata Motors and seeks the transfer and vesting of 997 acres of land to the state government.

Prepared by the Industry Department, the bill will revoke the lease agreement between the Tatas and West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) and seeks to empower the government to return the land to unwilling owners who have not taken compensation. It also allows the state government to utilise the remaining land.

Tata Motors Nano project has already been abandoned and the auto major has removed its machinery and plant to other states.

Mamata, who ended the 34-year long rule of the Left Front in West Bengal, had hurriedly announced an ordinance on June 9 to reclaim the land at Singur.

It was Mamata's election pledge to return 400 acres at Singur to farmers who unwillingly parted with their land for the small car plant which relocated to Sanand in Gujarat.
