New Delhi: Amid tight security, counting of votes for the 87 Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir are being to install a popular government. The election results will end the nearly six-month long Governor's rule in the state.

Here's a look at how the two regions have chosen their representatives in the past.
In 1996 National Conference won 14 seats in Jammu and 40 in Kashmir. The Congress won 4 in Jammu and 2 in Kashmir and the BJP won 8 in Jammu and none in Kashmir. Other parties which include the BSP and the Janata Dal won 11 in Jammu and 2 in Kashmir.
In 2002, the National Conference won 9 in Jammu and 18 seats in Kashmir. The Congress won 15 seats in Jammu and just 5 in Kashmir valley and the BJP this time just won 1 seat in Jammu, and failed to win any in Kashmir valley. The PDP won all its 16 seats in Kashmir Valley and other parties won 12 seats in Jammu and 7 in Kashmir valley.
Counting of votes of 2008 polls began at 0900 hrs IST at 22 centres in district headquarters across the state. J-K saw an unexpected high voter turnout of 61 per cent during the seven-phase elections despite a boycott call by separatists.
