Gun licence tops UP voters' wish list
Gun licence tops UP voters' wish list
A gun in UP's Avadh region is a status symbol. Their vote goes to anyone who can get them a gun licence.

Shajahanpur: As UP goes to poll, It’s not bijli, pani or sadak that some voters want in Sahajahanpur . Their vote goes to anyone who can get them a gun liscence.

Shajahanpur Resident Manoj Kumar said, ``Whoever makes my gun licence, gets my vote.''

Incidentally, a gun in UP's Avadh region is a status symbol, a ticket to move up in life. In fact, after Lucknow, Shajahanpur has the highest number of gun licences, 43000 in all. Owning a gun is a huge craze in UP.

One licence allows one to keep three guns.

However, when a crime is committed, it’s the knives which come out, never the gun. Using the gun means losing that status symbol if you get caught.

Some people in UP are willing to sell land/property everything for a gun, says Shajahanpur district magistrate.

A major reason for transfers and postings of the local district magistrate is that he didn’t issue a gun licence. So, if the aam aadmi (common man) is so crazy for the gun, what about the netas (leaders)?.

BJP’s Pilibhit candidate Varun Gandhi has three, Union minister Jitin Prasada has four, Gorakhpur's famous temple head priest Yogi Adityanath has declared two guns, BSP's Azamgarh candidate Akbar Ahmed Dumpy has a pistol but it’s Sultanpur's Sanjay Singh who has his eye to the barrel has six guns between him and his wife.

However, for the moment, the district administration has ordered all guns in the safe house till the duration of the polls.

What's your reaction?
