Govt hopes to get nuke bill passed this session
The passing of the legislation is one of the last remaining steps required to operationalise the Indio-US nuclear deal.

New Delhi: The government plans to get the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damages Bill before Parliament for approval during the ongoing monsoon session, sources told CNN-IBN.

The contentious bill which is currently in the Standing Committee has been given an extension till August 12.

The bill was introduced in Lok Sabha on 7 May amid walkout by the Left and Bharatiya Janata Party MPs.

The passing of the legislation is one of the last remaining steps required to operationalise the 2008 India-US 123 civil nuclear cooperation agreement.

The bill fixes the maximum amount of liability in case of each nuclear accident at Rs.500 crore to be paid by the operator of the nuclear plant. This has been vociferously opposed by the Opposition.
