Jaipur: Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje on Friday expressed shock at senior politician Sharad Yadav’s remarks body-shaming her as she urged the Election Commission to take action against him.
The chief minister said that Yadav had not only hurt her with his sexist and misogynistic comments, but insulted all women.
"I am shocked. I feel insulted. He has insulted women. I think to set an example, it is very important that the Election Commission takes cognizance," Raje told reporters after casting her vote for the Rajasthan election at a pink voting booth exclusively for women in Jhalawar.
Yadav had made the outrageous comment on Thursday while campaigning in Rajasthan, where voting for 200 seats is being held on Friday.
"Vasundhra ko aaram do, bahut thak gayi hain, moti ho gayi hain (let Vasundhara relax, she is tired, she has become fat)," Yadav, a former union minister had commented on her weight.
The BJP complained to the Election Commission against Yadav.
Later on Thursday, he sought to downplay his comment as only a "joke" and not meant to hurt the Rajasthan chief minister.
"I said it as a joke. I've old relations with her. It wasn't derogatory in any way. I had no intentions of hurting her. When I met her, I told her then also that you're gaining weight," he said.
The 73-year-old, who quit Bihar's ruling Janata Dal United over differences with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar last year, has a history of making sexist comments. Last year, Sharad Yadav made a strange connection between the "honour of a vote and a daughter's honour".
In 2015, Yadav, while participating in a discussion in the parliament, suddenly started describing the beauty of "saanvli (dusky)" South Indian women.
