Ranchi: RSS ideologue Sanjay Joshi on Saturday claimed that the divide between the rich and the poor would further broaden if FDI in retail was allowed.
"The government s economic survey last year pointed to the vast gap between the rich and the poor and between the city dwellers and rural inhabitants. The gap will only increase manifold if retailers, like Walmart, are allowed to penetrate the Indian market," Joshi said.
The former BJP general secretary disputed Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma s assertion that FDI in retail sector would throw up one crore jobs within three years.
"Anand Sharma says opening FDI in multi-brand retail will create one crore jobs, but what would be the fate of 17 crore farmers and their families? What will be the fate of the 26 per cent population?"
He alleged that large companies failed to create even a quarter of employment opportunities of the total number jobs they had promised in different countries before launching of retail sector.
In the interest of farmers, transporters and small time retailers, big companies should not be allowed in the retail sector, he said.
