New Delhi: The Election Commission on Friday sent a notice to Union minister Shri Prakash Jaiswal over his remark that if the Congress did not win elections in Uttar Pradesh this time, then President's rule must be imposed on the state.
The remark drew ire from all sides, including his own. He, later, withdrew his comments saying he was just talking about constitutional alternatives.
This is not the first time the Congress, especially its ministers, has rubbed the Election Commission the wrong way. Salman Khurshid recently raked up a controversy when he promised at a rally in Farroukhabad in UP that the Congress would raise the Muslim quota to 9 per cent if it was voted to power.
Another Congress leader, Beni Prasad Verma, followed him, with similar remarks during an election rally in the state.
Both were forced to retract their statements. However, both the ministers claimed that the Muslim sub-quota was a part of the Congress manifesto.
Things came to a head when it was claimed that the government was considering removing the model code of conduct from the Election Commission's purview.
