Bardhaman: An assistant sub-inspector of police was suspended in connection with the killing of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) activist when he tried to save party's Jamuria candidate from a band of assailants led by a local

coal mafia on Monday. District magistrate Omkar Singh Meena told PTI that

departmental proceedings have been initiated against the ASI of Jamuria police station, Asit Mandal.

The suspension follows complaints by TMC that Mandal had taken no steps despite being present at the spot during the incident at Barul village, he said. The TMC had complained that Mandal had in fact let the coal mafia Dinabandhu Bauri go free though he was caught and handed over by the party workers after the incident.

TMC workers led by the candidate Prabhat Chhatyopadhyay had sat on a dharna in front of the police station on Monday and in their FIR named 19 as accused, including Bauri. Meena said he had also ordered Burdwan district superintendent of police Humayun Kabir to arrest Bauri by tonight.

Chattopadhyay was pulled out of his car and beaten up by the armed gang allegedly led by a wanted coal mafia Dinabandhu Bauri at Barul. To save the life of Chhatyopadhyay, TMC activist Rabin Kazi had tried to resist the gang and he too was beaten up before Bauri hit him with his speeding car. Kazi died on his way to the Asansol sub-divisional hospital on Monday.

TMC chief Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit Jamuria on Tuesday to participate in a protest rally.
