New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi accepted the party's defeat in the elections to Haryana and Maharashtra assemblies.
In a statement, she said, "The Congress Party accepts the election verdict delivered by the people of Maharashtra and Haryana with humility and resolves to play a constructive and vigilant role. The people of Maharashtra and Haryana trusted us. We thank our supporters and voters for having stood by us, and our workers for their tireless and unstinting commitment to the party and its ideology."
Congress which had ruled both Haryana and Maharashtra lost the elections in both the states. Party Vice President Rahul Gandhi too issued a similar statement congratulating the BJP for its success.
While Congress won just over 40 seats in Maharashtra, it has been reduced to just 15 constituencies in Haryana.
