Cong calls for anti-Mulayam front in UP
The Congress has made an appeal "to like-minded parties" for the formation of an anti-Mulayam Singh front in UP.

New Delhi: In spite of having backed the Mulayam Singh Government in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress on Monday made an appeal "to like-minded parties" for the formation of an anti-Mulayam Singh Yadav front in the state to prevent division of secular votes in the Assembly poll.

"The division of secular votes in the Assembly elections should be minimised," Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said.

"It should be a non-communal front against Mulayam Singh," he said. While he didn't specifically mentioned any party names, Singhvi said his party will soon begin negotitations with parties willing to join such a front.

"We cannot force any party to join the front," he said. Singhvi said the Congress has kept its options open about the course of action to be taken against the Samajwadi Party Government. "Before taking any action, we have to take into account all aspects of the issue."

The Samajwadi Party-led government is likely to seek a trust vote on the floor of the House during the state Assembly session beginning January 18. "We will prove our government's majority in the House during the session," PTI quoted SP spokesman Rajendra Caudhary as saying.

The SP leader alleged that the Centre was meting out step-motherly treatment to UP, and added that the UPA government had not bothered to release funds for various welfare schemes in the state despite repeated requests..
