Choose us or the US: Left leaders tell UPA Govt
Don’t move forward on the nuclear deal, say three leaders.

New Delhi: The Left parties may have announced truce with the UPA government but their war of words continues.

Three top Left leaders on Tuesday warned the Government it would face “consequences” if it moves ahead on the Indo-US nuclear agreement.

"The Government was planning to approach the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in September. Usually, September is the time when the IAEA conducts most of its business. The CPI-M’s firm stand is that the government should not approach IAEA before the Hyde Act panel brings out its report,” said CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat in Thiruvananthapuram.

"If the government takes any follow-up action on the deal, all steps to stall it would be taken," Karat told CPM’s Malayalam newspaper Deshabhimani.

Karat said the Left was against the multi-nation naval exercises in the Bay of Bengal, as it involved the US, which “intends to make India its strategic partner like Japan and Australia."

In Kolkata, CPI general secretary A B Bardhan warned the Government of “consequences” if it went ahead with the nuclear deal. “If the government brushes aside our concerns and goes ahead with its original plan (to operationalise the nuclear deal), it will face consequences," Bardhan said.

Veteran CPM leader and former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, too, said the Government will have to face "consequences" if it went ahead with the Indo-US nuclear deal.

"The UPA government is trying to turn the country into the American fold which is against the Common Minimum Programme on the basis of which the Left is extending support to the Centre," Basu said while flagging off a protest march against naval exercise.

"This is an extremely important battle, not only against America but also against the Central government, which is handing over our country to imperialist forces," Basu told the rally.
