The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to get a new working president by August-end, sources told News18 as speculation mounts over the party’s next leadership after the end of JP Nadda’s term.
Nadda’s tenure as the BJP national president ended in June 2024 but as per a resolution passed in the BJP National Executive meeting last year, he would remain at the helm till a new party chief is chosen.
But with Nadda being given charge of the Health Ministry in the Narendra Modi government 3.0 and election for the new BJP chief unlikely to take place before January 2025, the party is likely to go in for a working president who can share the work load.
On Wednesday, PM Narendra Modi had held a meeting at the Parliament complex with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda and BJP General Secy (Organisation) BL Santosh. The meeting went on for nearly two hours. After Santosh and Nadda left, PM Modi had a one-on-one meeting with Amit Shah, with sources saying the topic at hand was the next BJP working president.
The BJP has officially been tight-lipped about the probable names, but on Thursday began another meeting of all its General Secretaries (Organisation) from across states for two days. News18 has learnt that the two-day meeting is the final deliberation about the BJP’s performance in Lok Sabha election 2024. Given the importance of General Secretaries (Organisation) in BJP, discussionon the working president cannot be ruled out.
Top BJP sources also told News18 that Nadda will remain available for advisory roles during the transition period to the working president and later to a full-time president.
