Lucknow: With Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and union minister Smriti Irani visiting Amethi on January 4, the poll pitch in Congress’s bastion Amethi seems to be rising.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit comes at a time when the party is bolstered with victory in three states in recent Assembly elections. He is scheduled to attend programmes in Amethi on January 4 and 5.
Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani will be participating in a blanket distribution programme organised by Raghavram Sewa Sansthan on January 4. Irani has been active in Amethi even after being the runner up in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Amethi Congress district president Chandrakant Dubey said, “We will be welcoming Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi in a grand welcome ceremony as it will be his maiden visit since the Congress’s victory in three important states.”
The BJP had made a strong push for Amethi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, fielding Smriti Irani against Rahul Gandhi. Irani lost the electoral battle, but continued making regular visits to the constituency.
The skirmishes between the Congress and the BJP in Amethi have been open. Last year, posters depicting Rahul Gandhi as Lord Rama slaying Prime Minister Narendra Modi, portrayed as ten-headed Ravana, had appeared in Amethi.
Later, a new set of posters were seen in Amethi which ‘welcomed the missing Amethi MP’, who had ignored health, education and development of Amethi. The poster had a grim looking Rahul Gandhi and said it was from the development deprived people of Amethi.
