Srinagar: At least 72 per cent voters cast their ballots during re-election held in four polling stations in Sonawari and Kargil constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

Of the total 2,797 voters on rolls, 2,022 cast their ballot in the four polling booths, an election officer said.

The re-election in two polling stations in Sonawari constituency - that went to polls on November 17 - was ordered by the authorities after electronic voting machines (EVMs) were allegedly snatched and destroyed by activists of the National Conference on that day.

"Election observer for Sonawari constituency A Mujamdar expressed his satisfaction over the smooth conduct of re-polling for Poshwari-A and Poshwari-B of Sonawari where the voter turnout was about 65 per cent," a poll officer said.

"Out of the total electorate of 1,501 for these polling stations, 974 voters exercised their franchise," the official added.

Similarly, in the Kargil constituency of the Ladakh region, re-polling was held for two polling stations of Chliskote where out of 601 votes, 514 votes were cast and in the Apathi polling station, where out of the total of 695 votes, 534 votes were polled.
