Even as October marks the retreat of the monsoon season, several parts of the country have seen heavy showers with incessant rains bringing parts of Delhi to a standstill on Saturday. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more showers for the Delhi-NCR region on Sunday.
Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rains are likely to continue in Mumbai, Pune and other parts of Maharashtra as a yellow alert for thunderstorms and heavy rains was issued. An orange alert has been issued in other parts of the country, including Uttarakhand and UP.
Landslides Snap Road Connectivity Between Sikkim and West Bengal
Heavy rain early on Sunday triggered multiple landslides in Sikkim, snapping road connectivity between Gangtok and West Bengal. According to a senior official, huge boulders have jammed National Highway 10 at two places 19 Mile and 20 Mile — between Singtam and Rangpo in East Sikkim, as per PTI.
Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Tamil Nadu
The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in many parts of Tamil Nadu till October 11. The Nilgiris district, according to the IMD report, will get heavy to very heavy rain on Sunday, as per IANS.
Second Highest Rainfall Since 2007 in Delhi
The national capital received the second highest rainfall since 2007 in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am, according to IMD data on Sunday. The city saw near ceaseless showers measuring 74mm till 8.30 am Sunday that brought the maximum temperature on Saturday down by 10 degrees, closing in the day-night temperature gap to a record low. Incessant rains for the second consecutive day in the national capital improved the air quality on Sunday to “satisfactory” level.
Meanwhile, in a tweet on Sunday, Mahesh Palawat, vice president of private weather agency Skymet, said that the downpour in the last 24 hours led to a new record – it was the highest the city has seen in Safdarjung in October over the last decade.
Record Single-day October Rain in Mumbai
The city on Saturday recorded 114 mm rainfall in 24 hours. Officials at IMD said that Saturday witnessed the highest rainfall recorded within a 24-hour span on October 8-9, as per the Indian Express. The overall highest single day figure in October was recorded in 1988, when it had rained 140.8 mm on October 15.

Showers Continue in Rajasthan
After rains on Saturday, parts of the state saw heavy downpour on Sunday as well. Udaipur witnessed a change in weather with showers in several parts.

According to a meteorological department spokesperson, light to moderate rain was recorded in many parts of the state on Saturday. There was heavy downpour in some places. Additionally, four people were killed and seven injured in lightning strikes in Rajasthan’s Pali and Chittorgarh districts on Saturday. Officials said that rainfall was likely in most parts of east Rajasthan for the next two days due to an active western disturbance system.
Landslide, Fresh Snowfall in Uttarakhand
The Tanakpur-Pithoragarh road was closed on Sunday due to a landslide amid heavy rainfall in Champawat, Uttarakhand. Parts of the state also received snowfall. Visuals of Hemkund Sahib in Chamoli district enshrouded in a cover of snow were shared by ANI.

More Rains Predicted for Delhi-NCR
The IMD predicted more light to moderate rainfall for parts of Delhi-NCR, UP, and Haryana on Sunday morning.

Incessant rains led to waterlogging and traffic snarls in parts of Delhi on Saturday night, even as the showers cleared the air and brought down the temperature.
“All 12 stations in Delhi received rainfall today. Moderate rainfall to continue till tomorrow. No warning issued. Likely to reduce tomorrow, sky will remain cloudy. No significant rainfall from 10 Oct onwards, drizzling/light rain might happen,” RK Jenamani, Scientist, IMD told ANI on Saturday.
Yellow Alert in Maharashtra, Mumbai Records Highest Rainfall in October
The IMD on Saturday issued a yellow alert for parts of central Maharashtra, Marathwada and over Konkan, for the next three to four days.
“Mostly for the entire of Maharashtra, there are expectations of thundershowers, associated with isolated heavy rainfall. Thunderstorm warning- yellow warning- given for parts of central Maharashtra, Marathwada and over Konkan, for the next 3-4 days,” IMD Mumbai Nitha TS, Scientist-C had told ANI.

4 Die in Rain-related Incidents in UP
Four people died in separate rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, according to the relief commissioner’s office. One death each was reported in Lakhimpur Kheri, Etah and Ambedkar Nagar in incidents caused by excessive rains. Another person died due to a lightning strike in Banda, it said, as per PTI.
Meanwhile, parts of Uttar Pradesh also saw waterlogging after heavy rains.

Orange Alert in Some States
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday predicted the onset of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some states thereby issuing an orange alert for the 8th and 9th of October. The states include Uttarakhand, West UP, East UP, East Rajasthan and West MP & Gujarat on Saturday, stated RK Jenamani, scientist at IMD.
