Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena chief Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was shot dead at his residence on December 5 and since then the two accused, who can be seen in viral CCTV footage, are still at large while a massive operation has been launched to catch them. Sources told CNN-News18 that Rajasthan police has a lot of leads on which a special investigation team (SIT) has been working. More than 80 suspects have been rounded up. However, a direct link has not been established with the killers.
The responsibility for the murder has been claimed by Rohit Godara, who is a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Rajasthan police believes there can be four reasons because of which this killing may have happened:
1. After gangster Ankit Bhadu from the Bishnoi gang committed a few murders in Ganganagar, enmity grew between him and Gogamedi. Bhadu was killed in an encounter in 2019 and it was suspected that Gogamedi had leaked his details. Since then, the Karni Sena chief had been on the hit list of the Bishnoi gang.
2. Gangster Sampat Nehra, who is lodged in a jail in Bhatinda, wanted to expand his operations in the Churu area and he was also targeting Gogamedi. Punjab police had passed on this information in an intelligence note to Rajasthan police.
3. Gangster Anand Pal Singh, who was killed in an encounter by Rajasthan police in 2017, was said to be close to Gogamedi. The Karni Sena chief carried out a donation drive in his name but allegedly did not give the money to Singh’s family. His daughter, Chinu, who allegedly has been involved in several crimes, threatened Gogamedi several times and may be behind his killing.
4. Chotu Bhatt was a close aide of Gogamedi. He now works with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and may have been behind the attack.
Rajasthan police believes that this is a case of revenge killing as Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was no saint. And that was why he was not given the police security that he had been seeking since 2016.
His requests had been rejected not only by the Ashok Gehlot administration but also by the previous Vasundhara Raje government.
Sources said Gogamedi was a history-sheeter and had more than 30 criminal cases against him.
CNN-News18 has accessed Gogamedi’s crime records.
Beginning in his hometown of Hanumangarh in 1995, he faced charges of kidnapping, extortion, wrongful restraint, dacoity, illegal weapons, murder, etc. More than 30 such cases were registered against him.
After a request was made by Gogamedi for protection, Rajasthan police conducted a threat assessment and concluded that if police security was provided to him, he could use it to spread his wings in the field of crime.
