Sahil Kataria, who was arrested by the police for assaulting a co-pilot of an IndiGo flight, has been granted bail by the authorities. In a viral video, Kataria was purportedly seen assaulting the pilot of the Delhi-Goa flight following a delay of over 12 hours.

He attacked the pilot while he was announcing a delay in the flight’s takeoff at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Who is Sahil Kataria?

Thirty-five-year-old Kataria, who recently got married, was reportedly heading to Goa with his wife for their honeymoon.

Kataria, a resident of South Delhi’s East of Kailash, runs a stationery and toy shop in the neighbouring Amar Colony area, according to a report by Indian Express.

After the incident, which took place Sunday evening, Kataria was arrested under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 290 (punishment for creating public nuisance) of the IPC and section 22 of the Aircraft Rules.

He was released on bail after a notice was served to him under Section 41 of CrPC.

“He had recently got married and was going on a vacation with his wife on Sunday… she was also deboarded from the aeroplane by CISF and aircraft officers at Delhi Airport after the incident,” the IE reported quoting senior police officers.

As per the report, Kataria told police that he was frustrated over the delay and the irresponsible behaviour of cabin crew members which made him lose his calm and assault the pilot.

After the assault video, another clip surfaced online, where Kataria can be seen apologising– apparently to the pilot– with folded hands. He can also be heard saying “Sorry sir” to the person who is recording the video– while he was being taken away by the authorities on the tarmac.

“He and his wife apologised after the incident to the staff and before police… an FIR has already been lodged and the case will be taken to court,” the officer reportedly added.

Katariya May Be Put On ‘No-Fly’ List

Meanwhile, IndiGo Airlines on Monday formed an internal committee to address the matter, news agency ANI reported.

As per officials, the committee is tasked with determining appropriate actions and will specifically discuss putting the accused passenger on the ‘no-fly list’ under the category of unruly behaviour.
