Three Lok Sabha MPs from the Congress — Dr K. Jayakumar, Abdul Khaleque and Vijayakumar alias Vijay Vasanth — on Friday deposed before the privilege committee in the matter related to revocation of their suspension. The committee has decided to recommend revocation of their suspension and will send it to the Lok Sabha Speaker for his final approval on Monday, said sources.
Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi had moved a motion on the floor of the house on December 18 to refer the case of these MPs, among several MPs that faced suspension in the winter session of Parliament, to the privilege panel for further consideration.
Sources in the committee told News18 that while deposing before the committee, the three MPs apologised for their behaviour on the floor of the house that led to the suspension. The apology issued was unconditional, sources said.
Sources say these MPs told the panel that they had no choice but to go before the speaker’s chair given the circumstances during that period, which they, however, regretted.
The privilege committee for Lok Sabha is chaired by BJP MP Sunil Singh. Apart from Singh, other members of the committee who were present in the meeting included Kalyan Banerjee from TMC, T R Baalu from DMK, K Suresh from Congress, among others.
The case of these MPs has been dealt with in a manner similar to the previous cases, including that of Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary who had also faced suspension with a privilege notice for calling the Prime Minister names.
A total of 146 MPs, including 100 from the Lok Sabha, were suspended during the last winter session for creating ruckus on the floor of the house. The opposition MPs demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah appear on the floor of the house and tell the house why the Parliament security breach happened. Apart from the three Lok Sabha MPs, a privilege motion was also moved against 11 MPs from the Rajya Sabha.
