Jahangirpuri Violence: Clashes Break Out During Religious Procession, 6 Cops Injured | Top Updates
Delhi Police has appealed citizens to not to pay heed to rumours and fake news on social media

Clashes broke out between members of two communities in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Saturday evening after stones were allegedly pelted at ‘Shobha Yatra’, a religious procession conducted on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti in the area. The situation is under control now as the Delhi Police has deployed adequate security personnel including senior officers to control the situation. Some vehicles were torched by mobs during the violence that occurred at around 6 pm.

Special Commissioner (law and order) Dependra Pathak said six policemen have been injured. “One of them, the sub-inspector, has been shot in the hand. There was no firing from the police side. Tear gas shells were fired by the police,” he said, adding that rioting and attempt to murder case against unknown has been registered.

Two policemen – one sub-inspector and one constable – have been injured in the incident. Sources told News18 that

whether the cops received gunshot wounds or not will be established only after the medical report. No injuries to civilians have been reported so far, they said.

Amit Shah Speaks to Top Delhi Police Officers

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Delhi Commissioner of Police Rakesh Asthana and Special Commissioner (law and order) Dependra Pathak about the violence and directed them to take necessary action, official sources said.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has given necessary directions to the Delhi Police and is keeping a close watch on the situation, the sources said, adding that additional forces were also deployed in other sensitive areas, besides those adjoining Jahangirpuri.

Delhi Police Appeals People to Maintain Peace

CP Asthana told CNN-News18 that strict action will be taken against the rioters once the situation is brought under control. “Our first priority is to bring the situation under control…but strict action will be taken against rioters,” he said.

Taking to Twitter, Delhi Police said senior officers have been asked to remain in field and closely supervise the law and order situation and undertake patrolling.

He also appealed citizens to not to pay heed to rumours and fake news on social media.

“The situation is under control. We are trying to create a peaceful environment by holding talks with peace committees and appeal to everyone to maintain peace,” said Pathak while speaking to the media from the site.

What Delhi LG, CM Say

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged everyone to maintain peace and order. “It is important to maintain peace and order … police and other forces led by the central government will take action. I request everyone to maintain peace,” he said.

Speaking to the media, Kejriwal said, “I appeal to everyone to maintain peace as the country can not progress without it. The central government has the responsibility to maintain peace in the national capital. I appeal to people to maintain peace.”

The Chief Minister also said LG Anil Baijal has assured that all steps are being taken to ensure peace and that guilty will not be spared.

Meanwhile, Baijal has condemned the incidents of violence and stone pelting in Delhi and said that none behind these activities will be spared. He took stock of the situation along with Delhi CP and has appealed to the people to maintain peace and restrain and cooperate with the police in maintaining law and order.

He also has asked the CP to depute forces at all other identified sensitive areas/localities in the city and ensure mobile patrolling and vigil under the direct supervision and responsibility of senior officers. The LG has also directed that all possible help be provided to the injured police personnel apart from civilians who suffered injuries in the scuffle.

Reactions from Political Leaders

Commenting on the violence incident, BJP MP from Delhi’s Northeast district Manoj Tiwari called it a “big conspiracy” and said the culprits should get the harshest punishment.

Meanwhile, RJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Kumar Jha said efforts were made to disrupt the peace and harmony in the city in Jahangirpuri area. He requested to the central government to identify the miscreants and take strict action against them.

Heavy security have been deployed in the Jahangirpuri area after a clash between two groups.
