Readers across the world can finally rejoice as the shortlist for the renowned Booker Prize for 2022, was announced recently. The list includes the shortest book and the oldest author to have been nominated in the history of the prestigious book prize. The official website of the Booker Prize said that writers from five countries and “a wealth of truly fabulous fiction’ were seen at the competition this year. This year’s list also includes three independent publishers and several titles inspired by real events. The winners of the coveted literary prize will be announced at the Roundhouse in London, on October 17.
Octogenarian Englishman Alan Garner, who will soon turn 88, has been shortlisted for “Treacle Walker", the shortest finalist novel by word count, as per the Booker Prize website. An Instagram post shared by the official page of Bookers Prize called Garner’s book “tautly written," ‘but with visionary poetry in every line.’ Garner is the oldest among the authors shortlisted this year.
The post described the book as the story of an apprenticeship, a struggle during which Joe–the main protagonist–must gain a new kind of sight.
Britain’s most prestigious book prize includes 6 titles every year. This year, the shortlist represents six authors from five different nationalities and four continents. The list also features an equal split of men and women.

At 116 pages, Author Claire Keegan, ‘Small Things Like These’ is the shortest book to be recognized in the Booker Prize’s history – although Alan Garner’s Treacle Walker contains fewer words, noted the official website. The six shortlisted authors will each receive £2,500 (nearly Rs 2.3 lakh) and a specially bound edition of their book. The winner of the Bookers Prize will receive £50,000 (Rs 46 lakh)
