Covid: India Records Highest Single-day Tally Since Last Sept, CJI Permits WFH for Advocates Amid Rising Cases
With over 4,000 fresh cases, India has registered today a slight increase in the single-day tally after recording 3,038 infections yesterday

India has recorded a jump in its single-day tally of Covid cases today with 4,435 fresh infections in the last 24 hours that have taken the active caseload to 23,091.

Yesterday, India registered 3,038 cases. Tuesday’s tally of 3,038 infections was a slight dip from the day before when India registered 3,641 fresh cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, a day after logging its highest single-day tally in six months with over 3,800 infections.

Today’s tally is the highest single-day jump in cases since last September. A total of 4,777 cases were recorded on September 25 last year. The death toll increased to 5,30,916 with 15 deaths in the last 24 hours, the health ministry data said.

India has been witnessing an uptick in cases lately, prompting several states and UTs to ramp up anti-Covid measures to keep cut the chain of transmission.

CJI Permits WFH for Advocates Amid Rising Covid Cases

Amid rising Covid cases, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud said the Supreme Court is willing to hear lawyers via video conferencing.

Referring to reports of uptick in cases, a bench comprising the CJI and Justice JB Pardiwala said the court is more than willing to permit lawyers to appear through the hybrid mode. “We can hear you through video conferencing mode also,” the CJI said.

States Bring Back Curbs

Delhi recorded 521 fresh Covid cases on Monday, the highest single-day rise since August 27 last year, and one fatality, according to data shared by the city health department. The positivity rate in Delhi stood at 15.64 per cent.

The health bulletin also mentioned that the primary cause of the death was not Covid and its finding was incidental. Delhi had recorded 573 positive cases on August 27 last year with a positivity rate of 3.62 per cent along with five deaths.

Some states have brought back mask mandates in high-risk areas. In Maharashtra’s Satara district, officials have imposed a mask mandate for employees and officials working in government and semi-government offices, colleges, and banks following a spike in cases.

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij on Monday said that wearing masks will be made mandatory for all health workers, and in areas where a gathering is expected to be above 100 people.
