The upcoming assembly elections will be a major political test, especially for the newly formed joint opposition bloc INDIA as it will not only determine the standing of the opposition against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but also set the tone for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

Out of five states slated to go to polls this year, the Congress is in power in two of them – Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, while the BJP is the ruling party in Madhya Pradesh.

Telangana, on the other hand, is ruled by KCR-led Bharat Rashtra Samiti and the Mizo National Front (MNF) is in power in Mizoram.

Ahead of announcing the schedule for assembly elections in five states, the Election Commission on October 6 held a meeting with the police and expenditure observers chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar asking them to ensure that the menace of money power is controlled thoroughly.

The ECI announced that around 1180 observers will fan out across the five states to monitor and ensure free and fair elections. These observers will be deployed for the forthcoming elections to the legislative assemblies of Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana.

In other poll-related developments, the Indian government is mulling over introducing the ‘One Nation, One Election’ policy and for that purpose, the Centre constituted a committee headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind.

Meanwhile, addressing the media, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Monday said, “In 40 days we visited all 5 States and held discussions with political parties, Central and State enforcement agencies.”

The EC also added the commission will set up new booths in remote and inaccessible areas to facilitate voter participation.

“New Polling booth to be set up in desert areas of Barmer, Rajasthan & on Tulsi Dongri Hill in Chhattisgarh-Odisha border. Polling stations will be set up in reserve forest areas/ sanctuaries for tribals in Madhya Pradesh Polling teams in Mizoram will travel on foot through 22 non-motorable PS and 19 riverine polling stations by boat,” he added.
