The December 24, 1999 hijack of the Indian Airlines flight is getting a series treatment at Netflix with Anubhav Sinha attached as creator and director. The show is titled IC814: The Kandhar Hijack and stars Vijay Varma, Patralekhaa, Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, Arvind Swamy, Dia Mirza, Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, Amrita Puri, and Anupam Tripathi.
The web series marks Patralekhaa’s return to OTT after the 2022 series Teerandaaz. According to the makers, the series revolves around “the 24th December 1999 hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight IC 814 which was en route from Kathmandu to New Delhi. It was taken to Kandahar. The hijack lasted seven days and while the crew and passengers suffered, officers back home tried to find a solution to bring them home.”
Patralekhaa made her debut in 2014 with City Lights, directed by Hansal Mehta. In this poignant drama, she portrayed the role of Rakhi, a small-town woman navigating the challenges of urban life alongside her husband. Patralekhaa’s portrayal was lauded for its authenticity and emotional depth, earning her widespread acclaim and several awards nominations.
Her ability to embody the intricacies of her roles with nuance and conviction garnered praise from audiences and critics alike, solidifying her position as an actress to watch. From portraying a fiercely independent woman in Nanu Ki Jaanu to her character in Forbidden Love, she fearlessly embraced diverse characters, each with its own set of challenges and complexities. Besides IC814: The Kandahar Hijack, she will soon be seen in Wild Wild Punjab, a Luv Ranjan film that promises a fast pace and an interesting storyline.
As for IC814: The Kandahar Hijack, the director said on Thursday, “When I started doing research, almost everyone remembers a few things about the hijack, and what all happened during the process. I realised it is a very complex story and a lot of things happened in those seven days and not many people know about it.”
